  • Nissan March: The Cheapest Nissan Cars To Own In Thailand

    Nissan March
Starting from 380,000 baht (US$12,500), the Nissan March is the cheapest brand new Nissan you can buy in Thailand. In the U.S., it is known as Nissan Micra. It isn’t odd that the same car has few different names in different places. What is more important is, if it is worth to own one?

The youthfulness March features a 1.2-liter engine (HR12DE) that develops 79 horsepower and 106 nm at 4,400 rpm. Thanks to the high torque output at low engine speeds, the car accelerates well and it gives good fuel consumption. The most stunning thing about the March is the 4.5 meters turning radius that makes it easy to turn. Together with the windscreen design that has great visibility, it makes the hardest parallel parking become easy. Without doubt, it is cute and most suitable for city use especially in a city like Bangkok. (more…)

  • Ferrari 458 Italia sitting calmly

    Ferrari 458 Italia

If we were to rate the most beautiful sports car born in 2009, we will definitely vote for the Ferrari 458 Italia, the successor to the Ferrari F430. The Ferrari 458 Italia in automobile world is like Angelina Jolie to entertainment world, sexy, powerful, and beautiful. We have shouted a BIG “WOW!” during its first debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Today, we shouted twice “WOW and WOW!” while we spotted a sexy red 458 Italia sitting silently and calmly in Pavilion. We were given the chance to take a few shots of this super exotic sports car and good things should be shared.

    Ferrari 458 Italia

The 458 Italia features a direct-injected 4.5 L V8 engine that delivers 562 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque at 9,000 rpm. At 9,000 rpm, it is unquestionably will make the driver scream and shout non-stop in the car. 80% of the torque is available at 3,250 rpm. What about the speed from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph)? It takes only 3.4 seconds. Most people are unable to wear a pant in that amount of time.

    Ferrari 458 Italia side view

It was sitting there without a sound, but it attracted a bit crowd to look at it, capture its picture, and enjoy looking at it. How many people actually know it is capable of reaching 325km/h when it starts to talk?

    Ferrari 458 Italia

The black winglet you can see from the picture above can be deformed at high speeds to create more downforce and also to direct more air towards the air intake. The faster the car goes the more air it gets. Together with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the fuel consumption of the car is recorded at 17.1 mpg (7.3 km/l). Again, this is a Ferrari!

  • Learning To Drive A Car

Learning to drive a car is easy with the following guide. This includes safety driving tips, videos on how to drive a car (either manual or automatic transmission), and also tips to handle a car during emergencies. There are three “Ps” you need to know: Preparation, Precaution, and Practice. Preparation is what you need to do before sitting on the driver’s seat; Precaution is what may happen while driving; Practice is what every driver needs to do to improve their skills.

    Preparation

Most people will feel panic for the first time. People who have excessive hand sweating or sweaty palms may consider putting on a pair of driving gloves. Driving gloves allow a softer and better grip on the steering wheel. A firm grip on the steering wheel allows more control and also increases the safety at high speed.

    Sitting position

The sitting position is very important in order to control a car well. Adjust the driver’s seat for proper leg room that fits you the best. Slight, tilt, and seat angle are what you need to adjust. Slight the seat to a position where your foot can operate the pedals with your back supported by the seat. It is not good if the seat is too far from the pedals because your foot may not reach them especially driving uphill. If the seat is adjusted too close to the pedals, the driver may suffer from leg cramp.
    Driver's seat
(Pull it to slight the seat to the best position)

People often tilt the driver’s seat to a wrong position. The seat should be tilted to make you feel more comfortable while driving.

    Driver's seat

The button to adjust the seat angle is usually located near to your back. The best angle is between 100 to 110 degrees because this angle supports your body weight and maintains an attentive posture. The picture shown here is a driver seat from a Honda Fit (Honda Jazz). Different cars will have different ways to adjust the seat, car seats in some suitably equipped cars can be adjusted using electronic controls.

    Learn the dashboard symbol

Before getting into a car, you need to understand how a car runs. Every dashboard symbol means something to the driver. You will need to find it out from the owner’s manual. Here are the basic three symbols you need to know:

    1. Brake system warning light
    handbrake symbol
If this symbol light is on, it means the e-brake is engaged. New drivers always forget to release the e-brake and just step on the gas pedal to run the car.

    2. Low Fuel
    low fuel symbol
This symbol means the car is running out of gasoline or petrol. If you see the light is on and the driving distance is far, please go to the nearest petrol station and top up the petrol.

    3. Engine warning light
    engine warning light
You can definitely see this symbol in most cars. This symbol indicates that the engine oil level is too low. The lights should extinguish as soon as the engine starts.

    Do not carry extra passengers
Having an instructor sitting beside is good, but it is not advisable to carry extra passengers when you are learning to drive a car. Extra passengers may distract you while driving. It is also recommended to switch off your mobile phone to avoid distractions.

    Understand traffic rules

It is a must to have a Learning License or Student Driver Magnets to be able to drive on the road. For new drivers, it is recommended to learn at housing areas or places with less traffic. You will need to understand some basic traffic rules including:

    • Do not hit a pedestrian.
    • Do not speed over the limit.
    • Do not beat red light.
    • Do not cross lane. Keep to your own lane.
    • Do not over take if it is prohibited.
    • Do not drive on the wrong direction of a one-way street.
    • Make sure the road is clear before making a turn.
    • Stop at red signal before the stop line.
    • Give signals when you want to make a turn and follow the correct lane when turning.
    • No texting while driving.

    Understanding the car

It is advisable using cheap cars for your learning. This can reduce the pressure in you. Otherwise, pick an easy-to-control car such as the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Mazda Mazda2, Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Veloster, Mini Cooper, Kia Soul, Smart Fortwo, Honda City, Nissan March, Perodua Myvi, Toyota Prius C, and Honda Brio.

    rear view mirror

A standard car will have a steering wheel, a gear knob, a rear view mirror, two side mirrors, as well as a speedometer to show the speed of the car. Adjust the rear view mirror so that you can clearly see what is coming from behind. Also adjust both the side mirrors to a position where you can clearly see both sides.

    side mirror

Understand that there are manual transmission car and automatic transmission car. A manual transmission car will have a manual gear knob with numbers on it. It also has three pedals: clutch pedal, brake pedal, and accelerator/gas pedal. An automatic transmission car or automatic car will have only two pedals for brake and gas. If you are ready, choose one of the guides below based on the transmission mode in your car:

  • 2010 Honda City Review

    2010 Honda City
The Honda City is a subcompact car that we see on the road everyday. One of the Honda City owners contacted us to review her car. Thanks to Vivian who had given us the opportunity to test drive her beloved 2010 Honda City Grade S. It is the fifth generation that was first introduced in Siam Paragon, Bangkok on 10 September 2008. Vivian purchased the car at RM85,480 in 2010. She traded in her Renault Kangoo for RM40K and the balance she settled with cash.

Vivian told us she goes for the Grade S because it shares the same engine with Grade E and Grade SE. All of them use the same four-cylinder 16 valve SOHC i-VTEC engine that delivers 120 hp @ 6,600 rpm and has a maximum torque of 145 Nm@4,800 rpm. She prefers not to pay RM92,980 for extra accessories including fog light, door mirror with turn light, exhaust pipe finisher, 16” alloy wheels, Modulo body kit, Nanotechnology solar control film, paddle shift, steering wheel audio control, leather steering wheel, leather gear knob, rear armrest with cup holder, and rear foldable seats. Grade S comes with 15” alloy wheels which is good enough for her. Grade E and SE have adjustable seat but Grade S has no such feature, this does not bother her at all.

When the car was first launched in 2008, our first impression was the front view of the car looked exactly like the Kamen Rider Black (Masked Rider Black), a superhero for most of us when we were kids. The design of the car looks cyber and it is a big jump from the previous generation.

Honda City and Kamen Rider Black

    Road Test

This time, we are told not to rev the car over 140 km/h and with this speed it is good enough to test the car. We brought the car to North-South Expressway and try it till 130+ km/h.  The car ran steady and did not wobble. Driver’s heart will definitely pump faster especially those who are not used to high speed driving. When we reved the car, the response was fast compared to some other vehicles in the same category. The handling was good and we could slightly feel the taste of the fourth generation City. The steering wheel is light and it will be a good car for beginners or first time car owners.

    Honda City

    Honda City maintenance cost

The car has 32,000km on the odometer at the time we reviewed the car. According to Honda service center, these are the preventive maintenance rates and costs for a Honda City up till 35,000km.

    x1,000 km** 1 5 10 15 20 25 30 35
    Month** 1 3 6 9 12 15 18 21
    Labour* (RM) 27.56 62.01 110.24 62.01 124.02 62.01 110.24 62.01
    Parts (RM) Nil 85.22 115.90 85.22 221.75 85.22 200.34 85.22
    Total Cost (RM) 27.55 147.25 226.15 147.25 345.75 147.25 310.60 147.25

Vivian sent her car to Honda service center seven times during her ownership. She sends the car to Honda according to the maintenance table above. All in all, she has spent RM1499.05 (~US$500) in one and a half years.

    Fuel Consumption

Combined 42 mpg or 18 km/liter. (This we have not yet tested)

What is good about the car?

The 506 liter boot capacity is very practical for anyone who needs a subcompact with big boot. You can put in two large luggage without any problems. The interior is also beautifully crafted with a hidden CD player. On the dashboard, there is a digital fuel consumption gauge to inform the driver how many km the car still can go. If it indicates less than 10 km, it is advisable to drive to the nearest petrol station. In the middle of the dashboard, there is a very useful USB port for today’s living. A USB can be used to charge most of the smartphones with USB connector. You can also load thousands of songs into a pen-drive and play the songs through the car stereo. Beside the USB port, there is an auxiliary port. You can play songs from iPhone or iPod on the car stereo by connecting them to the auxiliary port.

    Honda City interior

What is not so good about the car?

    • The car could run better with a wider tire size.
    • It will be better and more comfortable if the rear headset can be adjusted.

Honda City’s competitor or other similar cars: Toyota Vios, Ford Fiesta, Proton Gen-2, Suzuki Swift, and Mazda Mazda3.

Over the years, Honda has put in a lot of effort to research and develop the City which has gone through improvement after improvement. In conclusion, the name “Honda City” has established itself in the automobile world.
