Step 2: What kind of car should I buy?

advertisements

The easiest way to choose a car is based on the body style after you already know what you can afford. Consumer who chooses the wrong vehicle is those start their choice with wrong body type. It is not wise for a family of two to own a stylish SUV like Hummer. It is not wise for a family of six to own a coupe too. Hence, choosing the right vehicle starts from the car body style.

Sedan or saloon car

Honda Civic sedan
A sedan is the most common car and it is always the first choice for consumers who need a four-door car that fits four to six passengers with a separated trunk. Some of the top recommended sedans are Toyota Prius, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Volkswagen GTI, Buick LaCrosse, Volkswagen CC, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit or Honda Jazz, Kia Optima, Ford Fusion, BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CTS, Jaguar XJ, or Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Pickup or SUV is not always the right choice. Sometimes a small sedan is able to carry large things such as surfboard, bicycle, or kayak with the help of top carries at little cost.

SUV, MPV or Minivan, Crossover

Citroën Picasso
It seems like a MPV (Multi-purpose vehicle) or SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) best for a family of six or more. An MPV like Toyota Alphard features a 2.4 or 3.0 litre engines where the fuel economy is higher than small sedan cars. Now you may have to think is all the family members always travel together? If the situation is only the father drive the car to work for weekdays, and all the family members only go out once a while during weekend, is it really worth to travel 5/7 in such a big car? In stead of buying a $45,000 SUV, there is always an option to buy a smaller car at the price of $18,000 or even two smaller cars for $36,000 if it is really needed. If all the family members are always travel together with many luggage, then an MPV or SUV is needed. Compare to the stylish SUV, MPV is less handsome but more economy in terms of car price, insurance cost, maintenance, and roomy. If you have made up your mind to choose an SUV

Trucks or pickups

Ford Ranger
They are tough and they are built to work like cow in paddy farm. Trucks have high towing ability, stronger suspensions, and reliable for any heavy-duty job. Trucks include Nissan Frontier, Chevy Silverado, Ford Ranger or the famous Ford F150 are best for consumers who need a strong cow to work for them.

Coupe

Audi TTS coupe
Coupe is for consumers who want to drive a car more than just driving. It is all about styling, performance and act-cool. Expensive coupes include Porsche Cayman, BMW M3, Audi R8, Audi TT, Porsche 911, Corvette Z06 and Mercedes-Benz SLK are big man’s toy rather than just a transport. It is not really recommended for large family although some coupe has two to three rear seats. Imagine that during raining day and four people were forced to run to reach the car. Front passenger needs to stand under the rain and wait for rear passenger to go into the car and that is impractical.

Honda CR-Z Hybrid rear seat
(2012 Honda CR-Z Hybrid rear seat, notice there is not much of leg room for rear passenger)
Usually, the rear seat in a coupe is very small. The head will hit the roof for passenger who sits at the back due to the silky and aerodynamic design. What we say? The room is just enough for pets. The legendary Mazda RX-7 FD is one great example. Some car manufacturers even give up the rear seat to keep the car shape, for example, Nissan 370Z Fairlady. Coupe car price is from $10,000 up to $100,000 depending on the style and performance. A cheap coupe under $20,000 including the Mini Cooper, Fiat 500, or Hyundai Veloster may be the best car for teenager who needs a cool ride to school.

Convertibles

BMW Z4 convertible
Convertible is for consumer who want to enjoy wind on the face, sunlight on the head, and moonlight above the eye. These enjoyments can only be done for if you are staying in a clean city with nice breeze. It is pointless to buy a convertible and drive in the city with heavy traffic and bad air pollution likeJakartaorBangkok. Convertible will become useless in these cities and what is the point to go for convertible for the first place? Convertible is not recommended for teenagers who are under 20 years old although the safety features like protection bar for rollover accident and airbags are recognized. But keep in mind that these airbags are not going to work if the seat belt is not put on. For convertible lovers, Ford Mustang, BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK, BMW 3 Series, Porsche Boxster, Porsche 911 Cabriolet, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet are always recommended.

Hybrid or Electric

Toyota Prius hybrid
Hybrid or electric is best for consumer who needs a car with good fuel economy or ultra-good fuel economy. Drive an electric car can avoid the gas price that keeps on rising but not much of choices are available in the market today rather than Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt. Thus, hybrid is an attractive choice in the market today. Our top recommended hybrid cars are Toyota Prius, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Honda CR-Z, and Honda Insight.

Wagon

Volva V40 wagon
Wagon is something in between sedan and SUV. It is almost similar to sedan but with more cargo space. The trunk is not separated at most time to allow bigger cargo space. It is not so popular because consumers who need a car to carry more things prefer SUV nowadays.

Hatchback

Mazda Mazda2 hatchback
Hatchback is a sedan without a separated trunk. Hatchback allows more cargo space and rear passenger can reach the storage at the back during the journey but it is not so practical to use compared to sedan. This is also the reason why hatchback is cheaper than sedan. Take the Ford Fiesta for example, hatchback is few thousands cheaper than the sedan. Other than design, it is not much of difference between hatchback and sedans because some sedans in the market have fold-down seats that allow bigger storage like bicycle.

Exotic and Luxury

Pagani Zonda
If budget is not a problem, and the choice is either an exotic or luxury car, it is depends on what you like and judge the car from inside out based on the quality of the car. Is the outlook attractive enough? Is the interior or the driving position has everything you prefer? For example, dashboard design, high quality leather seat with best workmanship, performance of the engine, wheels and overall design. Cool exotic cars like Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari 458 Italia, or the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG are definitely head-turner.
